Sophia Farooq Mawdudi, Republican Defender of Apartheid Israel

Sophia Farooq Mawdudi or Sophia Farooq Maududi) is an American Republican political activist from Cobb County, Georgia, who emerged as a prominent grassroots leader within the Georgia Republican Party during 2024–2025. Although she has not held elected public office, she gained statewide attention through her campaign for Chair of the Cobb County Republican Party, one of Georgia's most influential county Republican organizations.  Sophia's public profile is unusual because she combines three distinct identities: she is an American conservative activist, the granddaughter of the influential twentieth-century Islamic thinker Syed Abul A'la Maududi, and a political organizer seeking to expand Republican support among diverse communities in suburban Atlanta. Her campaign attracted both enthusiastic support from grassroots conservatives and scrutiny because of her family background. 

Family Background

Sophia Farooq is the granddaughter of Syed Abul A'la Maududi (1903–1979), the South Asian Islamic scholar, journalist, and founder of Jamaat-e-Islami, established in British India in 1941. Maududi remains one of the most influential Muslim intellectuals of the twentieth century, and his writings continue to shape Islamic political thought across South Asia and beyond. Sophia has acknowledged her family heritage while emphasizing that she is an American citizen engaged in local politics. During public discussions surrounding her campaign, she noted that she grew up in a Muslim family and has spoken about the diversity within her own extended family, mentioning that some of her siblings have married into Christian and Jewish families. 

Entry into Republican Politics

Sophia became active in the Republican Party at the grassroots level in Cobb County, a suburban county northwest of Atlanta that has become one of Georgia's most politically competitive regions. Rather than entering politics through elected office, she built her reputation by: volunteering in Republican Party activities, organizing community outreach, serving within local Republican committees, working to strengthen Republican organization in South Cobb, participating in voter mobilization efforts. Supporters credit her with revitalizing Republican activity in districts that had previously received relatively little organizational attention. 

Campaign for Cobb County Republican Chair

In early 2025, Sophia announced her candidacy for Chair of the Cobb County Republican Party, succeeding outgoing chair Salleigh Grubbs. Her platform emphasized: strengthening grassroots participation, increasing volunteer engagement, expanding Republican outreach into communities that traditionally voted Democratic, greater accountability of elected Republican officials, promoting conservative principles rather than personality-driven politics. The Cobb County Republican Assembly endorsed Sophia and her leadership slate after an internal endorsement convention, describing her as hardworking, issue-oriented, and committed to Republican growth, particularly in South Cobb.  Although she ultimately did not win the chairmanship, her campaign significantly raised her visibility within Georgia Republican politics. 

Political Philosophy

Sophia identifies with the conservative wing of the Republican Party. Her public statements have emphasized: constitutional government, grassroots activism, election integrity, community engagement, strengthening local party organizations. She has also expressed support for President Donald Trump's political agenda and has stated that she worked actively during the 2024 election campaign.

One of the most discussed aspects of Sophia's campaign involved questions concerning her religious background and family lineage. During a Republican Assembly candidate forum, Sophia publicly stated: she opposes terrorism in all forms, she supports Israel's right to defend itself, she condemns Hamas, she considers herself patriotic and committed to American constitutional values. Supporters argued that criticisms based solely on her ancestry or religion were unfair and emphasized that her record should be judged on her own actions and public positions.

Sophia's campaign generated considerable online discussion because of her relationship to Maududi. Some organizations and commentators argued that her family background warranted greater public scrutiny, while others viewed such criticism as an inappropriate attempt to judge a candidate by ancestry rather than personal beliefs or conduct. These competing narratives became a notable feature of the campaign.  There is no public evidence that Sophia herself has been accused of criminal activity or membership in any prohibited organization. Much of the debate focused on whether a public figure should be evaluated independently of the views of previous generations.
